Down to Discover: Hunting in Eagle River

We’re all fun and a whole lotta game up here, so it should come as no surprise that Vilas County is a favorite for many hunters. With 240,000 acres of scenic public land, there’s plenty of space to hunt, hang with friends, and have a great time. So, take your pick from county, state and national forest lands, and public access lands and get ready to take aim.

With that much ground to cover, it’s good to have a plan of where you’re going. The Department of Natural Resources and Go Wild Wisconsin are great for area maps and habitat/cover information. Also make sure to check out our hunting resources.

The area is home to ruffed grouse, American woodcock, and white-tailed deer. But it’s also home to many other activities to do when you’re not walking the hunting grounds. Make time to check out Tribute and Riverstone breweries. And if you’re looking to add a little competition to your trip, check out Kickin Axe, catch a Windigo hockey game, or watch a game together over some food at Andy’s Pontoon Saloon and Sweetwater Spirits.

Forget something? Pick up extra supplies you may need for the next day’s hunt at Walkabout Paddle and Apparel or The Hiker Box. While you’re downtown, you can check out a variety of local businesses and restaurants. And for those in your group who aren’t hunting for game, they can hunt for deals at the Wi-Does Wine Walk where they can sample wines and shop sales in participating businesses.

After a day of fun and hunting, stay in a place that’s big enough for you and your entire party by booking one of our cottage or home rentals. Rest up for another action-packed day in Eagle River.
