Down to Discover: Porcupine Mountain
If you’re looking for more winter fun in our neck of the woods, take a day trip out to Porcupine Mountains, or the Porkies as they’re affectionately called. This day trip will take you about two hours north of Eagle River, so start your day early because there’s plenty to explore when you get there.
The 60,000 acres that make up the Porcupine Mountain area offer year-round recreation and some of the best views in the area –making it a favorite day trip for many Eagle River locals – even in the dead of winter. Easy hikes, which can be snowshoed or cross-country skied in the winter, take you through old-growth forests to the beautiful Lake of the Clouds. If you’re not up for trekking your way to the lake, you can still get a peek at its splendor from a fully accessible overlook.
The area is also known for its winter camping, fat-tire biking, and sledding. Plus, with 200 inches of snow per year, the area’s Sports Complex uses Mother Nature’s snow on their ski hills, giving downhill skiers and snowboarders a thrill and gorgeous views to boot.
Plan your day trip to Porcupine Mountains any time of the year to see lush greens in the summer, an explosion of color in the fall, and a quiet blanket of snow and calm in the winter.
