We talk a big game about all the winter fun there is in Eagle River, and while we might be known for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, hockey, and ice fishing, we can’t forget about how much fun there is to be had ice skating and sledding here too.
Lace Up Your Skates, But Leave the Stick at Home
With the World’s Largest Chain of 28 Connected Lakes, you can certainly find some space to take your own stakes to (but please use caution and make sure the ice is thick enough). But if you’re looking for a skating rink that’s not on our famous chain, try out the rink at the Vilas County Fairgrounds which offers rentals, live music, and concessions. Bring your own skates to the rink behind Eagle River’s City Hall. Or take a spin (or axel) over at Conover Town Park or Snowflake Ice Rink in Land O’ Lakes and utilize their warming huts and loaner skates for a fun family outing.
Head for the Hills
Grab your sled, your family or your friends and head over to the Town of Washington in Vilas County for a great time on their sledding hill located at 1850 Rangeline Rd. Open during daylight, you can enjoy a groomed hill (courtesy of Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club). Or you can bring your saucers, inner tubes, and toboggans, over to the Eagle River Golf Course. Park and gear up behind the clubhouse and head over to hole five for some heart-racing fun.
Party On
There’s even more fun to be had at the annual Blizzard Blast at Conover Park. With horse-drawn sleigh rides, giant ski races, recliner races, ice bowling, kid’s games, and so much more. Grab some food and drinks at the famous “snow bar” while helping out the local Fire and EMS Departments.
Need Gear?
Grab everything from snow pants to handwarmers, hats and mittens, maybe even a sled itself. Stores like Nelson’s Ace Hardware, The Hiker Box, and Glik’s should have you covered.
