Life Offline

There's a version of us that shows up when the phone's in the other room. More patient. More present. Fully there — not halfway somewhere else.

That version doesn't get much airtime these days.

Somewhere between the work emails that follow us home and the algorithm that knows us better than our friends do, most of us have lost the thread on what actually matters. Not because we don't know (we do, deep down), but because it's hard to hear it over the noise. A text buzzes. A notification lights up. Another thing that feels urgent but isn't.

Up here, most of the noise just... stops.

The Eagle River area isn't dressed up or trying to impress anyone. It's a fish fry after a day on the lake. It's kids figuring out how to skip a rock or catch a frog. It's the specific quiet of a cabin at night with no screens on. It's the stuff that felt normal once…before "normal" got so complicated.

If you're already here, you've made the hard part happen: you left the noise behind. What's left is just deciding how to spend the time you got back.

Going offline looks different for every family. We won't tell you how to vacation. But we've got a few ideas for getting back to basics, Up North style.

Take the Bait

We know you want to! Put down your phones and tablets. It’s “gone fishin’” time. The Eagle River area offers the ultimate fishing experience. Not only do anglers have an opportunity to catch some of the top gamefish on the planet – musky, northerns, walleye, and bass – the backdrop of conifer and deciduous trees across our lakes is unmatched. What’s more off grid than catching your own meal? And if you need a little help, consider hooking up with an area fishing guide, as they’ll be in tune with which Northwoods fish are biting – and where!

And here’s a little not-so-well-kept secret: The best part of fishing usually isn’t about the fish. Getting out on the lake with a dad, son, daughter, or best friend is more important than the rod and reel. Fishing is one of the best bonding experiences there is, because your entire world becomes that moment on the boat. With hundreds of lakes and the World’s Longest Chain of 28 Connected Lakes® available, there’s bound to be a serene place to set up for a day with a real chance to bond.

Find Yourself on a Trail

With miles and miles of hiking and biking trails, you’d think it might be possible to get lost. Thanks to some incredible volunteers and dedicated staff who have marked our scenic trails, getting lost is actually hard to do. Although, you might lose your cell signal. But never fear – listening to yourself as you navigate our forests and 240,000 acres of public land is a great way to reconnect with nature. You might even reconnect with yourself.

The area was once marketed as a health retreat for the unwell. In many ways, it’s still true today. Clean air, natural sounds, and physical movement all play a role in mental and emotional health. While today’s demands often require us to plug into digital experiences, it’s more important than ever to get off the grid and experience a natural existence with a good hike or bike ride on our trails.

An In-Tents Visit

It might be argued that you’re not truly living off the grid unless you’re camping. And quite frankly, sleeping under the stars in the Northwoods is underrated. The Eagle River area provides visitors opportunity to do it more luxuriously through glamping or in a more traditional “roughing it” sense in a tent. As one of the best camping destinations in the entire Midwest, the Eagle River area has its fair share of opportunities to camp in whatever style you’d like.

You can really find happy campers in Eagle River. And they’d welcome you with open arms if you decide to join them for an in-tents time!

Unplug to Reconnect

You deserve a time to set the phone down and live the way people were meant to live – in the moment. It’s time to get off the grid in our neck of the woods with a trip that creates lifetime memories that live on in you forever. We can’t wait to see you in the Eagle River area next time!
