We don’t let the cold slow us down. If anything, it just gets us outside even more. Because beyond what we’re known for (like being the Snowmobile Capital of the World®, the Hockey Capital of Wisconsin, and don’t forget ice fishing on The World’s Largest Chain of 28 Connected Lakes®), we’ve got even more fun that’ll keep you out of hibernation this winter. Bundle up and come take a look for yourselves.
Hit the Trails
This area is home to over 240,000 acres of public land filled with extensive trail systems of every difficulty and length. In fact, our trails are about as diverse as what you can do on them. There’s hiking, birding, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat tire biking just to name a few. The colder winter months offer some of the most beautiful, serene scenes to enjoy on the hikes. Make sure you bundle up or look for trails with warming huts along the way.
If you’re looking for something new while you’re on the trails, head out to the warming area on the Anvil Lake Trail to spend some time on Saturday mornings with some extra-special visitors. Here, you can hike or snowshoe about a half mile from the access point off Military Road to feed chickadees right from your hand with help from Forest Service volunteer Tom Hill.
Go for a Ride
Looking to get moving without overexerting yourself? Book a tour Haven Pines LLC for a private 45-minute wagon or sleigh ride as horses pull you through a 40-acre wooded property. Warm up halfway through with some hot chocolate by a roaring fire.

Feel like Royalty at the Ice Castle
Since 1933, the Eagle River Ice Castle has been a winter spectacle not to miss. Each year (weather permitting), volunteers remove ice from nearby lakes to construct a one-of-a-kind, 20-feet tall structure that’s visited by thousands each year.
So, skip the hibernation this winter, and get up here for more outdoor fun!
