Northwoods Holiday Season

Many folks embrace the winter season in our neck of the woods for the snow and ice that allow them to participate in their favorite activities, like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ice fishing. Others appreciate it for the cheerful spirit the holidays bring.

In Eagle River, we like to celebrate this time of year with fun group activities and ways to support one another through giving opportunities. Let’s look at some of our favorite events and activities in November and December.

Ho-ho-holiday Events

Shopping for the perfect gift this holiday season starts with the Wi-Does Wine Walk on Saturday, November 23. Sample up to 20 different wines in downtown Eagle River while the hunters enjoy opening day of the gun hunt season. It’s a great way to find a gift while your spouse is away!

Then a few weeks later, the Eagle River Area Chamber is hosting its annual Christmas Kick-off Party in Riverview Park from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. Children will have the opportunity to ask Santa Claus for a gift. The tree lighting ceremony will be held after dusk. Hot chocolate, food, and a festive atmosphere will warm the heart of anyone—even a grinch.

Mistletoe Magic is a drawing-based event with more than a dozen participating businesses on Saturday, December 14. While out shopping, enter a drawing at each participating business for a chance to win a prize.

Get (and Make) One-of-a-Kind Gifts

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without giving—either a present or a warm embrace. We can’t promise any hugs, but the Eagle River area is a great place to find a keepsake or unique craft for a loved one.

Trees for Tomorrow is hosting a Wreath Making event on Saturday, November 9. Two weeks later—Saturday, November 23—will be the Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale at Kalmar Community Center. The Native American Arts and Craft Show/Sale will be held at Lake of the Torches Convention Center the next day, Sunday, November 24. And Lac Vieux Desert’s Northern Waters Holiday Craft and Vendor Expo is the following Sunday, December 1.

And for the people who like doing all their holiday shopping after Thanksgiving, consider supporting Eagle River shops during Small Business Saturday and score some deals.

Sleigh this Winter

Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh makes for a fun holiday song. It also make for a fun time in real life. Rocking W Stable offers sleigh rides from December 20 through January 1, 2025. It includes an authentic experience as rides go through portions of the woods and includes a bonfire stop along the way. Haven Pines runs its sleigh rides on Fridays and Saturdays (with a few other special weekday options) from December 1 through March 1.

Fun Winter Activities

They might not be holiday themed on their own, but the right attitude can make outdoor activities feel like a holiday. Snowmobile trails typically open during the holiday season (December) and stay open as long as conditions allow. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are two other winter favorites for people looking to explore trails at a slower pace. And if you’re looking for a way to enjoy one of these outdoor activities with a holiday theme, join Trees for Tomorrow to take part in a New Year’s Eve Candlelight Hike/Snowshoe on Tuesday, December 31.

‘Tis the Season

Just like a proper Thanksgiving turkey, the Eagle River area is stuffed with holiday spirit this time of year. From outdoor activities in the snow to finding the perfect gift for a loved one, we’ve got those merry traditions for the whole family to rejoice. Plan your trip to see and truly feel what we mean. Yule be happy you did!
